Artist Profile: Mark O'Neill

Mark O'Neill was born in 1963. During his early days he lived in England, Mauritious, South Africa, Nigeria and Malta. Mark studied at Kingston College of Art, London and graduated with First Class Honours.

Mark worked for a time in London as an illustrator, but he always dreamed of the summer holidays spent with his maternal grandmother in Tullamore, Eire. During his time as an illustrator, he illustrated the cover of six Catherine Cookston novels.

On moving to Ireland Mark lived in an old barn near Tullamore. These were difficult times for Mark and in his own words "it made me realise that there had got to be a better way of living".

This thought prompted Mark to start selling some of his pictures. At this stage Mark charged £150 each. From the outset, he has used one framer, Noel Mee and that arrangement continues to this day. Things for Mark nowadays have moved on considerably. His paintings now sell from £500 to upwards of £5000. Mark first exhibited in Forge Gallery in County Louth and subsequently has had sell out exhibitions in the Frederick Gallery in Dublin.

Annually, Mark has had exhibitions in Wexford, coinciding with the Wexford Opera Festival. He is now in the happy position of living in a charming regency villa in County Wexford. At the Riverview Gallery, we are convinced that Mark has the potential in the future to rank as one of the most important Irish painters of his time.

The quality, draughtsmanship and sense of perspective in Mark's work is outstanding. We consider Mark's work to offer good, sound financial investment and consider it an absolute honour and privilege to display his pictures.

Mark has been concentrating more on Still Life and his particular talents in this respect are clearly demonstrated in his recent work. His use of light displays the mastery we have come to expect of him, and his draughtsmanship and interpretation of colour are a joy to behold. Mark still finds time, on occasion, to paint a few interior and animal scenes, and we are delighted that our recent acquisitions contain some beautiful paintings of such subjects.

Mark now features in the national press on a regular basis and continues to enjoy the international recognition that he deserves. The images that have been used to illustrate this page were produced from some of Mark’s work currently on display in the gallery. Riverview Gallery may not be huge in floor area, but we pride ourselves on being big on quality and it is the policy of the gallery to stock only the work of mainstream artists of the highest calibre, offering good long-term investment potential to our customers.
